Our topic for the Summer term is 'Mini Zoo'. This project has a science focus and teaches children about different animals, their life cycles and what they need to stay alive and be well. At the heart of this project children learn how to write instructions and explanations, and learn additional skills in labelling maps, animals and plants. This is what we have been doing so far:

Spring has definitely sprung in Year 1. In April we set-up an incubator in the classroom and after 21 days five fluffy chicks have joined the class as our youngest pupils!
We have also had visits from parents with their dogs. This gave the children plenty of opportunity to ask questions and they loved the hands-on experience. Many thanks to all parents involved.
The children really enjoyed Healthy Week

Our topic for the Spring term is called 'Pop-up'. In this topic pupils will have the opportunity to look at pop-up mechanisms. They will look at a range of pop-up books, experiment with the mechanisms and create their own pop up invitation for a fairy tale party. During our literacy lessons, linked to this topic, pupils will learn how to write and re-tell a range of traditional fairy tales.
We designed and made invitations for our Fairy Tale party

In December, we worked hard rehearsing for our Christmas concert 'Born in a Barn'. We thoroughly enjoyed learning the songs and performing on stage. Da iawn Year 1 and 2.
We ended our topic with an open afternoon for parents to display our learning of the Great Fire of London and to show our progress on the violin/cello. On show we had coiled pots made of clay and 3D paper houses to resemble a typical London street in 1666. We also baked fruit scones to sell from our Pudding Lane Bakery and raised an amazing £28. Many thanks from Year 1.
Year 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Cowbridge Fire Station and Tesco Culverhouse Cross. Take a look at our adventure......
Our topic for the Autumn term is called 'FIRE FIRE and we have many exciting activities planned. We have been learning about The Great Fire of London and working together to create The Bakery at Pudding Lane where the fire started.
We are thoroughly enjoying our new Foundation Phase Unit and are looking forward to planting out our boarders and tubs ready for next Spring.

Land Ahoy!
At the start of term we received this exciting letter from Captain Cutlass:
Welcome Shipmates!
Ahoy there!
I’m Captain Cutlass and this is my parrot, Perkins. We’re here to teach you how to become a pirate. Pirates need to be
clever, cunning and brave, and to be able to spot danger quickly. They also need to understand mysterious clues and unravel puzzles that help then to find valuable treasure. Join my crew and me on a journey through the Seven Seas, in our quest to find the priceless treasure of The Golden Galleon! Along the way you’ll learn how to become a skilled pirate, and if you’re very clever you’ll find the buried treasure too!
First, you need to get shipshape and ready for action by writing down all that you know about pirates. If you have any questions for me landlubbers write them down as well.
Ye old sea dog Captain Cutlass
and so our pirate adventure began.........

We turned our role play area into a Pirate Ship and made flags on the busy table.
We investigated floating and sinking and used this knowledge to design and make our own boats using junk materials to help Captain Cutlass.
Family Album
Many thanks to Mrs Ford (Charlotte's mum) for a very interesting talk on bones and joints.
The children have been learning about dental hygiene and have thoroughly enjoyed playing in the role-play area.
Our gardening area was very successful this year, the children enjoyed picking the peas and beans ready for harvest.
Year 1 held a Family Day. The children showed their parents around the classroom, played games, made cards on the Busy Table and enjoyed chocolate crispy cakes - A super afternoon!
For our Christmas trip, Reception and Year 1 went to Techniquest in search for Santa!'
We have been working hard rehearsing for our Christmas concert Christmas with the Aliens! We are doing really well and are looking forward to our performances this week. Here are some pictures of us on stage.
Year 1 2013/2014
Last term our topic was FIRE FIRE! We learnt about The Great Fire of London, fire safety and much more. We had a fantastic time at Cowbridge Fire Station.

We worked with Year 2 and produced a ‘fire hanging’ to express our learning using textiles.
At the end of our topic, we held an open afternoon for parents and sold freshly baked scones, delicious!
Our topic for this half term is 'Electric Rainbow' and it all started when Year 1 received an exciting letter from the King of Sparkle.
On Wednesday night, Year 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed a film and popcorn night surrounded by magical lights and lamps. The children wore their pyjamas and onesies and all snuggled down with teddies to watch Monsters Inc. University.

Throughout the topic, Year 1 received three letters from the King of Sparkle requesting them to find out more about Electricity. The last letter set a challenge to create a Christmas decoration with a bulb to brighten up the Kingdom of Sparkle and this is what we came up with.....

January 2014
Our topic this half term is 'Pop-Up'. We have been looking at pop-up books and creating our own. In January, we went to the pantomime in Cardiff to watch Jack and the beanstalk and we enjoyed the story so much this has become our pop-up theme. This is what we have been doing:

In the Innovate Stage the children will help to organise a fundraising day for the animal charity 'All Creatures Great and Small' - more information to follow. This is what we have been doing so far:
Our trip to Cefn Mably Farm park
We kept an incubator in the classroom and 3 eggs hatched successfully.
As part of our Mini Zoo topic, we have been fundraising for an animal charity - All Creatures Great and Small. We thought of our own ideas for a fundraising event. We made items to sell, including bookmarks, badges, biscuits and cakes. It was a very successful day and we raised just over £250! We are looking forward to presenting our cheque to the charity next week.

We thoroughly enjoy our whole class violin tuition on a Friday afternoon and at the moment we are preparing for a concert in July. We are currently learning how to use the bow and read music.
Our topic this term is 'Carnival'. The children will be learning about different cultures and celebrations around the world. We will be studying in greater depth the carnivals in Rio, Notting Hill and Cardiff. The children will read and listen to stories, myths and legends associated with different carnivals and understand their origins. We will also explore the colours and patterns seen at carnivals and the children will have the opportunity to use this knowledge to design and make masks and headdresses. To end our project the children will apply their skills and understanding by holding their own carnival procession.
