Welcome to year 3/4
Summer Term 2016 Part 2
Message to Year 3 and 4 from Mrs Gaisford
I hope you enjoy a relaxing holiday after all your hard work this year.
If you feel like playing some Maths games during the holiday then log on to active learn at https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk. Your username is your first name in small letters and your password is year3 or year4 depending on which year group you are in. The school password was shown on the letter you received. Have fun!
In our final full week we were visited by 'Animal Zone' and got to meet some unusual animals. Everyone was really excited and very brave, even holding snakes! We also held a Victorian Day where we all dressed up as a Victorian and took part in activities Victorian school children would have completed. Everyone took part in 'drill' and a 'hand inspection' at the start of the day and produced some super copperplate handwriting.
See above for pictures from Spring and Summer Terms.
During 'Healthy Week' we took part in challenges and found out more about healthy living. On Monday we were visited by workers from the local base at St Athan. We took part in physical, medical, dental and physio workshops. On Tuesday we found out more about why eating five portions of fruit and vegetables is good for us and completed a skipping challenge. On Wednesday Sofia, Morgan, Ffion and Gruff planned a PE lesson for the rest of the class and helped to teach it. On Thursday we took part in a Karate workshop and found out why water is so good for us. On Friday Gwenan taught the class street dance. Everyone agreed that they'd had a fantastic week and really enjoyed completing all of the challenges. See above for pictures from the week.
Our topic is 'Children of the Revolution' which focuses upon life in Britain for children during Victorian times.
Within this project the children will learn:
• About the Victorian era;
• About the social, moral and technological issues of the day;
• About the important people of the day including those who influenced and made changes;
• About the literature of the day and how it was used to entertain and inform;

responsibly for the good of the whole community.
We worked in groups to write and record our own radio programme.
We have been busy since February half term with our topic work and in PE. We represented a group of people in the community who were campaigning for or against a new park being built, wrote and performed scripts to show the meaning of proverbs, completed Maths problem solving activities, created a 'funky folk dance' and problem solving in PE in and were visited by Judith for four hockey training sessions. We also took part in our school Eisteddfod and Henry played the piano.
PC Kevin visited Year 3 this week to talk about staying safe while using the internet. We are also writing scripts in groups for a radio drama about an emergency.
Have a look at the pictures at the top of the page to see what we have been doing.
Our topic for the first part of the term was
'Marvellous Me!'
Within this topic the children learnt:
• About the heart, circulation, the pulse and blood;
• About major organs of the human body and their functions in keeping us alive and well;
• How exercise and a healthy diet keeps the body well and fit;
• About the digestive system;
• How to write explanation texts:
• How scientific and medical research has changed over time;
• How to work collaboratively.
We had a fantastic day at Techniquest looking at the exhibits and watching the human body show. We found out more about how our body works and Daniel and Jacob got to take part in the demonstrations.
We had a busy week working in groups to make monsters with moving body parts. On Friday we also took part in a 'Football First' fundraiser.
Well done to Lili-Mai, Callum, Sofia and Finlay for kicking the ball fastest in the class.
Have a look at some pictures of what we've been doing
below.

• How to present information visually and in writing using a range of media;
• How to plan visits, work out costs and use enterprise skills in a business environment.
We began the topic by discussing places we have been on holiday. We were visited by Mrs Curnow who told us all about her travels and showed us some of things she had brought back from her trips to Egypt. We greatly enjoyed asking her questions about her travels.
Year 3 also completed some dance work based on 'Singing in the Rain' while year 4 were swimming.

Autumn Term 2014
Our topic is 'Flight Engineers'. This project has a science focus and teaches children about flight and forces.
The children will learn :
• How to find information from non-fiction books and the Internet;
• About a range of flying gadgets/machines and the scientific principles which make them work;
• About a range of flying animals and their habitats;
• About the history of flight and its economical and social
importance;

• How to present a design brief to an audience.
Year 3 were visited by PC Kevin for a workshop on bullying. The children talked about different types of bullying including online bullying and ways it can be tackled. PC Kevin was really impressed with their sensible answers.
We had an exciting day at Techniquest looking at the exhibits and taking part in a private forces workshop. Sofia, Lilli, Charlie, Harry, William and Mrs Normansell all helped with demonstrations of forces in action. We found out about friction, gravity, air resistance and what happens when forces are balanced and when they are not. We also enjoyed looking at the floor exhibits and finding out how each worked.
Last Friday we were visited by a flight engineer called Julianne. She told us all about her work and the importance of flight engineers in making sure planes are safe to be flown. We all tried to fly by flapping our arms and jumping and then found out why humans can't do this. We found out how planes stay in the air. We then looked at different designs of paper plane and voted for the plane we thought would travel the furthest. Not many of us choose the right plane design. Well done to Harry and Ethan for choosing correctly.
