History of the School
Llanfair School 1929
Llanfair is a civil parish formed in October 1895, from the parishes of Llandough and St. Mary Church. St. Mary Church is situated on high ground in the Vale of Glamorgan west of the River Thaw. The church and the village centred around it, is a nucleated settlement. The local bed-rock is liassic limestone.
A national school (mixed and infants) was erected in 1852 and enlarged in 1898 for sixty children. In 1865, Mrs. Jane Daniel was the school mistress. The school motto was 'Train up a child in the way he should go.' (Based on Proverbs, Ch.22 v.6). A Public Elementary School (mixed and infants) was erected at Llanfair in 1911 and occupied in 1912. This school served Llandough, St. Mary Church, St. Hilary and Llanmihangel. The school master was Albert Bown. By 1923, there were eighty-five children attending the school at Llanfair.
In the early hours of 10 December 1973, the 1911 building was badly damaged by fire. The loss was enormous. The remains were demolished in 1975 and a new open-plan school was built in its place. The new building for Llanfair County Primary School was occupied in September 1976.
Since 1991, many changes have taken place. The school has ceased to be open-plan and two further classrooms have been added, considerably improving the accommodation. During 2005, the school hall and the adjoining classroom were extended and other building alterations were completed. The school celebrated its 100 year birthday during 2012. In 2015 the new, air conditioned classrooms for Foundation Phase were officially opened. Work continues on enhancing the learning environment as the school continues to grow.
