Welcome to Year 3
Summer Term 2014
We have greatly enjoyed our topic
'Gods and Gladiators'.
We completed many activities which included listening to and discussing Roman myths, researching some of the Roman Gods and Goddesses, discussing the role of soldiers and gladiators, creating a new Roman God based on an aspect of Roman life and presenting a case for our new God to Jupiter.
This week we have had a wonderful Roman Day where we dressed up, looked at numerals, presented our gifts and arguments to Jupiter and became masters and slaves during a Roman feast!
In June we had a fantastic time in the sunshine visiting Caerleon. We saw the remains of the Roman fortress and found out more about life there during Roman times. Some of us got to be masters and others had to be slaves and serve the masters as part of a workshop about Roman food! We tried on parts of a Roman soldier's uniform which was really heavy, visited the Amphitheatre and Barracks ruins and then visited the Roman baths.
Look at the top of the page to see photographs of our wonderful day out.
Our 'Big Maths-learn its' for the term are based on the nine times tables.
Please continue to practise other times tables too.
Summer Term Part 1
So far this term we been very busy with testing and finishing our topic work on
'Bones, Blood and Gory Bits'
We really enjoyed designing and making moving monsters in groups to create some friends for Frankenstein.
We took part in a workshop run by Warburtons bread company. We learnt more about healthy eating, food hygiene and food waste. We also created our own healthy sandwich, remembering our 'baker's hands' way of holding our hands to make sure they remained clean before we started.
We also dressed up to help raise money for the animal charity
'All Creatures Great and Small' and bought items made by years 1 and 2.

Our 'Big Maths-learn its' for the term are based on the four times tables.
Please continue to practise other times tables too.
Our theme is 'Bones, Blood and Gory Bits'
This theme has a science focus and teaches children about the human body including significant organs such as the heart, brain and lungs. Within this project we will learn:
• About the heart, circulation, the pulse and blood;
• About major organs of the human body and their functions in keeping us alive and well;
• How exercise and a healthy diet keeps the body well and fit;
• About the digestive system;
• How to write explanation texts using scientific language;
• How scientific and medical research has changed over time;
• How to create 3D forms.
In the first half term our theme was ‘999 Emergency’. Within this project we learnt:
How to raise dilemmas and discuss these, taking account the views of others.
How to write effective scripts, using features such as characters, narrator brackets (.....), scenes, stage directions and colons;
How members of our society can act together to resolve issues;
How we are members of the wider community;
How important it is that members of a community act responsibly for the good of the whole community.
We were visited by the author Anna Wilson who told us all about becoming a writer and how she gets ideas for her books. Some of us bought a book and she signed it for us!
PC Kevin visited us twice the half term. He started our topic by telling us about his important role in protecting our community. He also showed us and talked about his uniform and equipment.
On his second visit PC Kevin taught us about staying safe while using the Internet.
We were also visited by Mr Schembri who gave us a taster session of Tae Kwon Do.
We found out how news is gathered and reported. We watched and discussed reports on anti-social behaviour and how it can affect communities.
We were very busy with challenges and wrote our own, exciting scripts for our radio drama '999 Emergency' in groups. We performed our scripts in groups too. Listen to our group episodes of '999 Emergency' below.
Take a look at photographs of some the things we have done this term.
Have a look at the photographs below to see what we got up to before the Christmas holiday.
Autumn Term 2013
We greatly enjoyed performing in the Christmas concert 'Christmas is Forever'. Everybody who saw it thought it was fantastic!
We finished and presented our PowerPoint presentations about the holidays we planned in groups and presented. Everyone was really impressed with the presentations.
We had a fantastic time at our Christmas disco too. See the video above of some of our excellent dancing.
We led an assembly at the end of November about our value of the month 'Courage'.
Parents of children in our class attended and were greatly impressed by our poems, stories of people who have shown courage, performance of the story of 'David and Goliath' and singing.
Our topic for the second part of the term was 'Travel Agents'. Our learning included investigating and comparing different places and planning a trip. The topic began with two visitors to class who told us about their travels and showed us photographs. Mrs Curnow also brought in some items she bought whilst in Egypt and China to show us. This made us really interested in finding out about different places so we have completed research about different countries of our choice.
We had great fun dressing up for Children in Need. Some of us entered the talent show and reached the final!
We took part in a workshop which combined tag rugby skills with Maths. It was great!
In PE we worked in groups to create a dance to 'Singing in the Rain'.
Have a look below at what we did in the first half-term.
Autumn Term 2013
Our topic for the first half term was 'Sensoria'. Our learning included investigating sound and light and how they travel.
We greatly enjoyed performing the 'H2O song' in our harvest assembly. Look at the bottom of the page to see our performance.
We created a sensory area in the classroom and enjoyed showing Year 1 when they visited. Our parents enjoyed seeing the area when they visited the classroom.
To create our sensory area we combined our group ideas to prepare a final design and made a 'feely wall' and colour chains. We composed music to play in the area using Purple Mash. We also edited and recorded the poetry we had written to play in our sensory area.
We also created games and sequences in PE, performed and wrote poetry, completed shape and measuring work and investigated light.
We were very proud to earn the trophy for being the class who showed the value 'quality' the most.
We enjoyed Glenda the harpist's visit to the school. She played lots of lovely music and explained to us how a harp makes sound.
At the beginning of our topic work Mrs Normansell took the piano apart and Mr Lewis showed us a drum in parts. They showed us how the instruments make sounds and we got to explore these and other musical instruments.
We enjoyed our poetry work. We created and performed both our own poems and poems by others.
We looked at Shakespeare's poem spell from Macbeth, wrote our own versions and performed the original using instruments!
You can hear our performance of 'Gran can you rap?' by Jack Ousbey by clicking below.
